The death of a Calgary woman who was run over by a fully loaded U-Haul being driven by her husband could have been an accident, the man’s lawyer told his murder trial on Thursday.
Defence counsel Kim Ross said the evidence against his client, Ronald Candaele, was as consistent with an unintentional act as it was the accused committed a cold-blooded murder.

In final submissions before Justice Blair Nixon, Ross said the physical evidence didn’t fit with Crown prosecutor Hyatt Mograbee’s assertion that Candaele ran down his new bride, Melissa Rae Blommaert, before leaving her on a Bowness street to die.

“I just don’t understand,” said Kim Ross, her mother. “Not a problem child at all, did good in school. She worked, came home. She took care of her baby. That’s how she lived everyday. She lived for her child.”
The parents were dressed in purple at Friday s vigil, Zariyah s favorite color.
21-year-old Dawann Graham was also killed in the drive-by shooting. Police still don’t have any leads in their investigation.
“It’s not fair,” said Quay Hill, Zariyah’s sister. “These were innocent kids. They did not deserve that, and that’s the part that hurts the most.”
