Noam Chomsky: Something Rotten in the State of China?

The New York Times carries a transcript of Ezra Klein interviewing the venerable professor Noam Chomsky. The interview in its entirety is illuminating. However, the anarchist professor’s take on China gives one pause. It seems ill-informed and requires further elucidation. Ezra Klein: How do you think about China as an economic and geopolitical competitor? […]

Star Trek: Progressivism and Corporatism Don't Mix

ST:ENT was seemingly finding its footing with engaging story lines, the plug was pulled. Star Trek producer Rick Berman pointed to “franchise fatigue” as the reason for a drop in viewership. Actor Connor Trinneer, who played the chief engineer Trip on the show, cited poor scheduling by the UPN network and the departure of a corporate supporter in 2001 as leading to the show’s eventual demise with the final episode airing in May 2005. An attempt was made to resurrect the ST:TOS brand in 2009 same characters but played by different actors. The movie Star Trek was highly successful at the box office. This can be attributed to pent-up demand from long-time Trekkies, interest from sci-fi aficionados, as well as good promotion that attracted younger, curious fans. Historically Low Water at Lake Sonoma Points to Potentially Devastating Drought

Historically Low Water at Lake Sonoma Points to Potentially Devastating Drought CBS SF Bay Area 2 hrs ago Syndicated Local – CBS San Francisco LAKE SONOMA (KPIX) Sonoma County is facing a historic drought after two dry winters and, on Tuesday, county supervisors are expected to proclaim a drought emergency. “We’re looking, today, at the lowest level our reservoirs have ever been since they were built,” said Brad Sherwood, the spokesman at Sonoma Water. Lake Sonoma is the primary water source for about 600,000 customers in Sonoma and northern Marin Counties. Sherwood said the lake gets its water strictly from rainfall and nothing from snow melt.

Planned city hunting ban raises concerns | News, Sports, Jobs

iminor@dailypress.net ESCANABA A plan to amend the city’s code of ordinances to prohibit hunting in Escanaba was met with questions by the city council, who worried the language of the ordinance could inadvertently allow hunting around Ludington Park. During Thursday’s regular city council meeting, Escanaba Parks and Recreation Director Kim Peterson presented the ordinance, which would expand the city’s current ordinance prohibiting the discharge of firearms and other hunting weapons, such as crossbows and airguns, to prohibit all hunting, baiting, and blinds within the city limits. The changes were spurred by an ongoing issue of hunting blinds being put on land within the Westside Recreation Area. Currently, individuals can only be ticketed if they are seen discharging a firearm, but the number of blinds appearing over recent years has the city concerned for public safety.

The store sells alocasias and philodendrons among a wide selection of house plants big and small. Customers can browse in-store or choose to pick up their plants through curbside pickup. Before opening, Maranta was an online-only pop-up that performed curbside pickup services at a warehouse in Walker’s Point for six months. Rodriguez, who is also the managing director at gener8tor Music, said he learned about plants from Alfaro and started collecting them during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said he didn’t imagine himself working in a plant store at first but employed his experience in the music industry to start the business.
