ADVERTISEMENT O’Ree, 85, who is also known as the “Jackie Robinson of hockey,” competed professionally for more than two decades after first entering the league in 1958 as a player for the Boston Bruins.  At the time he joined the league, O’Ree was blind in one eye due to an injury he sustained two years before. Yet the talented athlete competed in more than 40 games while in the league until 1961 and continued to compete professionally for many years after.  Decades later, the hockey legend was tapped as the league’s first diversity ambassador in 1998, and, in the years since, O’Ree has devoted his time to making a social impact with his Hockey is for Everyone youth hockey program.
