The proposed high-speed passenger rail line bisecting the county was once again the target of opposition from the Commissioners’ Court on Tuesday as commissioners agreed to weigh in on a lawsuit challenging it. Commissioners approved a resolution in support of an “amici curiae” (friends-of-the-court) brief in the case of James Fredrick Miles v. Texas Central Railroad and Integrated Texas Logistics, Inc. The suit is currently before the Texas State Supreme Court on appeal.

Chasing Shadows: Gibson Road family rooted In agriculture by Pam Richardson Guest Columnist Our local farmers markets and residents would jump for joy if it were possible to bring Apalachicola plantsman Thomas Cameron Gibson back among us. We are accustomed to thinking that the forward march of time brings progress, but in some cases people were better off in the past, and this is certainly true in regard to the availability of locally cultivated produce in the Apalachicola area. Thomas was born in 1857 in Long Cane (near LaGrange), Georgia, one of nine children of Osbourn and Amarintha (“Minnie”) Gibson. A decade later, the Gibson family were living in the north Alabama boomtown of Bluffton where Osbourn worked first as wholesale grocer and then as a farmer. Something, however, led them to move again, this time to Apalachicola where, after Osbourn’s death in 1884, Thomas followed in his father’s footsteps and established himself as a farmer – and an extraordinary one at

Firefighters battle barn blaze Sunday - Wilmington News Journal

Firefighters battle barn blaze Sunday Crews worked to put out a large barn fire in the 1800 block of Gibson Road near Martinsville beginning at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Fire personnel with tankers and pumpers from Wilmington, Clinton-Warren, and Martinsville-Clark Township fought to bring it under control early on. The barn contained a camper and large amounts of firewood that firefighters soaked to keep from burning, as the metal roof melted and parts of the barn’s frame collapsed. No injuries were reported. Information on a possible cause was not yet available. The scene was cleared at about 3:25 p.m.
