PD: Suspect dead after hours-long standoff in Branford

BRANFORD, CT (WFSB) A six-hour standoff in Branford ended with the suspect dead.  Police said a man who was shooting at officers on Main Street on Tuesday afternoon was found dead in the home he was barricaded in.  It all started unfolding just after 12 p.m.  A Branford neighborhood remains closed off as a standoff between police and a barricaded person continues. Police said they received reports of shots being fired in the area of Main Street and Cherry Hill road. When officers arrived, heavy gunfire was coming from the upper floors of a business/apartment building. Although the standoff is over, police still have parts of Main Street blocked off due to multiple crime scenes.

But a very different picture was painted Wednesday night. Just after 10:30 Wednesday night, the Bridgeport Police Tactical Narcotics Unit was serving a warrant for the arrest of 49-year-old Wilfredo Alvarado at 130-A Chestnut Street when an officer looked out an open second floor window and saw a man lying on the ground, having apparently jumped out of the window. 

Large Brush Fire Causes I-95 Closures In Fairfield, Westport Area

(Westport Fire Department) WESTPORT, CT Emergency crews spent two hours Wednesday responding to a large brush fire, which caused closures along Interstate 95 near the Fairfield-Bridgeport border. Firefighters were notified around 1 p.m. of the blaze, which stretched across the grass and marsh from Parsell Lane in Westport to I-95. In total, 30 firefighters and officers from the Fairfield and Westport fire departments were on the scene, along with seven engines and a ladder truck. State police also assisted. CT State Police, Fairfield and Westport Fire Departments working at the scene of a large brushfire I95 southbound, south of exit 19.
