Second only to COVID-19 recovery, the continued unity of the United Kingdom is the key political issue across the British Isles. Debates about independence have dominated Scottish politics for the past decade, while in Wales, polling suggests there is increasing support for Welsh independence. In Northern Ireland, meanwhile, many believe the country will join the Republic of Ireland within the next 25 years.
A recent episode of BBC One’s The Big Questions asked “is feeling British over?” and discussed how a feeling of Britishness differs from the respective nationalities that make up the United Kingdom. Whether or not there is any meaningful prospect of any part of the UK breaking away, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that feelings of a distinct Britishness are increasingly rare.

Standing atop the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, the defence secretary, Ben Wallace, looked down from the flight deck and airily dismissed the stories of sleaze and infighting in Downing Street as ânot serious, just comedy gossipâ.
History of Stoke Poges where Stoke Park Club is located
- According to a local historian Lionel Rigby, the earliest known owner of the manor of Stoke and Ditton (Stoke Park estate)
was Siret the Saxon, vassal of King Harold.
- After the Norman Conquest at the end of the 11th century, Siret was forced out of the manor and William Fitz Ansculf from Picardy was granted a tenancy.
- 1750 is considered as a key date in the development of Stoke Park, stated the clubâs website. However, the history of the Stoke Park estate dates back to the Domesday Book (book was completed in 1086). In 1813, the owner of what was then called the Mansion House (the present Stoke Park Club) and the Manor House wrote what he called an historical and descriptive account of Stoke Poges.

Grade I-listed Chilham Castle, in Chilham, Kent, graces the market for the first time in 20 years.
One of southern England’s most beautiful country estates, comprising the Grade I-listed, 17th-century Chilham Castle, its medieval keep and its surrounding 300-acre demesne at Chilham, six miles from Canterbury and nine miles from Ashford, has come to the market with a guide price of ‘excess £15 million’ through Knight Frank.
The sale follows the death last July of its high-profile owner, Stuart Wheeler, who bought the castle and estate in a dilapidated state in 2002 and restored the house and gardens at vast expense. ‘In all my years at Knight Frank, this is as good a house as I’ve seen,’ enthuses Will Matthews of Knight Frank, who is handling the sale.
