Sergeants Musawenkosi Mabaso and Thulani Dlangalala were arrested three years ago after promising to release a suspected reckless and negligent driver in exchange for R7 500. The pair had been sent to process the man - who had been detained at King Shaka International Airport. The suspect is said to have phoned his father, who then paid the officers a portion of the amount, before alerting police. The KZN NPA s Natasha Kara says the Hawks set up a sting operation for the handing over of the remainder of the cash.

Two former Durban police officers have been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for taking a bribe. The accused were found to have taken a R7 500 bribe while serving as officers. They have since resigned from the police service. Two former police officers have been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment each for corruption after they were found to have taken a R7 500 bribe to release a suspect. The Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court handed down the sentence on Monday after finding Sergeant Musawenkosi Mabaso, 48, and Sergeant Thulani Dlangalala, 48, guilty of corruption. Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said in May 2018, Mabaso and Dlangalala were instructed to pick up a suspect who was arrested at King Shaka International Airport.

Two Durban cops who took R7500 bribe to release a suspect jailed for 10 years Share Durban: Two Durban policemen who took a R7 500 bribe to release a suspect have been jailed for 10 years. The Hawks confirmed that Sergeant Musawenkosi Mabaso and Sergeant Thulani Dlangalala, both 48, were sentenced this week in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court after being found guilty of corruption. According to spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo, in May 2018, Mabaso and Dlangalala were instructed to pick up the suspect who was arrested at King Shaka International Airport. “Along the way, the two officers demanded R7 000 in order to release the suspect for him to go home and come to court the following day. They were paid R4 500 and further demanded a balance of R3 000.
