Martin Luther King Jr. had been vandalized with racist graffiti. The Long Beach Police Department rushed to Martin Luther King Jr. Park at around 3 p.m. Friday after receiving reports of hate/bias-motivated vandalism, police spokesperson Brandon Fahey told NPR. They found that the front of the King statue had been vandalized with spray paint, which workers from the parks and recreation department were working to scrub clean. The graffiti has since been removed, and the department is investigating the matter as a hate crime.

This city has a major hidden white supremacists issue and it needs to be addressed ASAP.”

El crimen ocurrió el viernes por la tarde en el parque Martin Luther King Jr. en la cuadra 1950 de la Avenida Lemon.  El diario ‘The Long Beach Post’ informó que los símbolos que se asemejan a una esvástica y los pernos de SS de nazis fueron retirados por personal del departamento de recreación parques de la ciudad. Dos activistas de derechos civiles acudieron al abogado del distrito condado de Los Ángeles, George Gascón, para presentar cargos por delitos de odio en caso de un arresto o arrestos. “El odio que desfigura la estatua del King debería ser una llamada de atención para los funcionarios de Los Ángeles que la amenaza de actos de odio racista en el condado es grave”,  señaló una declaración emitida por Jonathon Moseley, director regional occidental del National Action Network y Earl Ofari Hutchinson, presidente de Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable.
