DNA from COVID mask helps jury convict child rapist

KING CITY, Calif. - A Monterey County jury convicted a King City man for raping a 10-year-old girl in 2018, after investigators obtained the prime suspect s DNA from a discarded COVID mask more than two years after the crime.
The jury found 28-year-old Leonardo Ramirez Jr. guilty of several charges Tuesday in addition to the rape, including the infliction of bodily harm on a child and using a dangerous weapon.
The rape occurred Feb. 3, 2018, around 7 a.m., according to a press release issued Wednesday by Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni.

A 70 year-old man was arrested in King City after a juvenile accused him of inappropriately touching her. She said when she tried to end the interaction, he hugged her and then touched an intimate part of her body. Anyone who may have witnessed the Friday interaction on North Vanderhurst Avenue is encouraged to contact the King City Police Department.
Atascadero names new police chief

The City of Atascadero has named a new police chief.
King City Police Chief Robert Bob Masterson was selected to fill the position left open by Chief Jerel Haley s retirement in October.
Chief Masterson has led the King City Police Department since 2016. Since then, he s been credited with reducing gang violence and improving crime statistics in the community and received a Congressional Commendation Letter for violent crime reduction in King City.
In June, the King City Police Department reportedly became the first police department in California to have gun-mounted cameras.
