RIYADH: Yemeni conjoined twins “Yousuf and Yassin” arrived safely with their parents at King Salman Air Base in Riyadh on Wednesday via an air medical evacuation plane from the city of Al-Mukalla.
King Salman ordered the speedy transfer of the twins and their parents to the Kingdom for a medical examination, Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, the general supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) and a renowned pediatric surgeon, said.
According to the Journal of Neurosurgery, craniopagus twins represent a rare phenomenon where twins, joined at the top or side of the head, share a portion of the skull. Cases of conjoined twins are rare only one per 200,000 births as most are female, according to various studies.

Following a directive from the Custodian of the two holy mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Yemeni conjoined twins Yusuf and Yassin, accompanied by their parents, arrived at King Salman Air Base in Riyadh today to be evaluated for possible separation surgery, the Center said in a release.
RIYADH: A medical evacuation plane on Tuesday arrived in Saudi Arabia carrying Yemeni parasitic twins for possible separation surgery.
The twins, accompanied by their parents, were flown from the south Yemen city of Mukalla in Hadramout to the King Salman Air Base in Riyadh and under the directives of King Salman were then transferred to the King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in the Saudi capital.
Their case will be assessed by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah and his medical team. A parasitic twin is an identical twin that has stopped developing but is physically attached to the fully developing twin.
Al-Rabeeah, who is the general supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, thanked King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for initiating the humanitarian mission.
Saudi Arabia cuts defence spending

Saudi Arabia will cut its defence budget for 2021 by 3.8% to SAR175 billion (USD46.62 billion), marking a continued decline in the country’s defence spending, according to budget documentation released on 16 December.
Overall government spending was reduced to SAR990 billion, down 2.94% year-on-year. Government revenues are anticipated to be SAR849 billion, creating a budget deficit of SAR141 billion, or 4.9% of GDP. Defence expenditure as a percentage of public expenditure is expected to remain relatively stable in nominal terms at 17.68%. Defence spending as a proportion of GDP is also forecast to decline from 7.04% in 2020 to 5.81% in 2021, a level not seen since 2013, as the overall budget is also reduced to 2014 levels.
