Steve McQueen s Small Axe: Education review: A moving history lesson

School can be a dangerous place for Black youth. If the teachers are primarily white, there’s a good chance they don’t know how to interact with and properly support the education of Black children. A large part of racism is based on a combination of fear and a natural inclination toward condescension. If a white teacher looks down on their Black students, they can feel it, whether it’s explicitly expressed or not. That, coupled with the white-centric nature of education in the Western world, reveals the deep biases in learning environments. When one considers how much white educators control the content of textbooks, standardized tests, and the overall tone of the educational environment, it’s easy to understand why so many Black students have difficulty in school. Why learn in an environment pre-determined to reject you? How can you come to a teacher for help if they don’t want to be around you?

Education – A dulled Axe [MOVIE REVIEW]

“Education” – A dulled Axe [MOVIE REVIEW] SHARE Kenyah Sandy as Kingsley Smith in “Education.” Photo Credit: Will Robson- Scott / Amazon Prime Video. “Education,” the fifth in writer-director Steve McQueen’s “Small Axe” series about West Indian life in London, receives a failing grade. Co-written with Alastair Siddons, “Education” was intended to illustrate the segregation and prejudice that begins early in the British educational system. Mother, a nurse, is a tough taskmaster who believes that education is fundamental and that it is only by working harder than anyone else that barriers set up against them as immigrants of color can be overcome. Kingsley’s older sister is the very embodiment of her mother’s theories. She’s un

CHRISTOPHER STEVENS reviews last night s TV: Need a comedy

Rating: Rating: Has there ever been a comedy straight man in a double act who found a new partner and switched role to become the funny guy? Bob Mortimer has done just that and I’m struggling to think of a precedent. If you don’t know what the straight man’s role is, think of Ernie Wise’s face as Eric Morecambe slaps him round the chops. Ernie’s job was much more than setting up the laughs. He was the backbone of every routine . . . the maypole around which his brilliant pal cavorted. That was Bob’s job, when he was one half of Reeves and Mortimer. He played the adoring acolyte, awe-struck by the confidence of Vic Reeves, in a partnership that took them through stand-up comedy, panel games and sitcoms.
