Flowers: Georgia voting law is no return to Jim Crow

I am so glad the whole white supremacy and gun nut narrative is over, so we can get back to the one about voter suppression. Those horrific shootings late last month diverted our attention away from what President Joe Biden has called “Jim Crow on steroids,” namely the recent controversial voting reform legislation passed in Georgia and signed by Gov. Brian Kemp. Anyone who has actually read the almost 100 pages of the Georgia law would know that it is not an attempt to keep Black voters from voting. It is not akin to the KKK roadblocks that my father encountered in Mississippi in 1967. It is not anywhere near as egregious as the murder of Viola Liuzzo, a white woman assassinated by the Klan in Alabama because she was accompanying Black friends to the airport after a voting rights rally. It doesn’t come close to creating the atmosphere on the Edmund Pettus bridge, the site of the late John Lewis’ near fatal beating.

Nat King Cole was beaten on a Birmingham stage 65 years ago today Updated 7:30 AM; Today 7:30 AM This photo, part of an archived series Alabama Media Group is donating to the Alabama Department of Archives, shows Cole backstage before the Birmingham show. It was shot by either Norman Dean, Eldred Perry or Robert Adams, all of The Birmingham News. Facebook Share In his mind, it should have been the next best thing to a hometown show. Nat King Cole was a Montgomery native whose velvet voice propelled him to stardom with hits like “Unforgettable” and “Mona Lisa” and in a few months would launch his own NBC variety show (the first hosted by a Black man).

New findings show Biden DOJ nominee organized conference championing cop-killers

President-elect Joe Biden picks Kristen Clarke as DOJ nominee who in the past has called for partially defunding police. Ian Prior, former DOJ deputy affairs director under the Trump administration, provides insight. EXCLUSIVE: New findings obtained by Fox News revealed that President Biden’s nominee to lead the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division organized a conference that was used as a tool by radical anti-government activists to champion cop-killers and free violent criminals. According to a previously unseen university transcript obtained by the American Accountability Foundation and given to Fox News, Kristen Clarke was a critical leader and organizer of the controversial Race-ing Justice Conference while she was a student a Columbia Law School in April 1999

Abusers and oppressors will rejoice the death of the Second Amendment

As a group of House Democrats pushed the presidential action on gun control, a group of House Democrats are pushing the Senate to vote on House-passed gun control bills. In either case, the result would be dangerous and make Americans more vulnerable. When the right to keep and bear arms is suppressed by a government, the doors to oppression and abuse are opened. I know, because I’ve seen it.  Hardwired, the global human rights organization I founded, fights against the oppression of religious communities of all faiths in countries around the world. Among these countries is Nigeria, where Fulani herdsmen have been waging a war against Christian farmers for the past decade, but in recent years it s grown much worse. The Fulani herdsmen are attacking farmland throughout the region to force Christian farmers out of the area and take over their land. The attacks typically increase in the spring and are carried out with AK-47s and machetes.
