Following the closure of Digital in 1994, Seamus Keating led a Government Task Force which was the driving force behind the establishment of the GTC. It comes as the centre is this morning announcing a major expansion which will create up to 12,500 jobs across the West over the next 15 years. Mr. Keating also previously served as City and County Manager for Galway. Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Seamus Keating said he’s honoured to accept the award.

It aims to address capacity issues, and enable the centre to become an even greater focal point for the expanding tech cluster throughout Galway and the West of Ireland. It’ll bring the total size of Galway Technology Centre to 72,000 square foot, and increase the number of floors at the facility from two, to four. Galway Technology Centre, based at Mervue Business Park, was established in 1994 as a social enterprise in the wake of the closure of Digital Equipment Corporation.

Posted in Technology Galway Technology Centre, (GTC) is to announce details of their new AcademyWest expansion, which is expected to generate a cumulative total of 12,500 jobs for the West over the next 15 years and estimated investment of €1.4 billion.  The expansion project is being strongly facilitated by Enterprise Ireland, who provide ongoing support to Galway Technology Centre. The centre is a social enterprise jointly owned by Galway Chamber and WestBIC.  The AcademyWest project will have a particular focus on facilitating rapid scaling for start ups and other innovation driven enterprises, as well as growing ICT businesses in need of second sites. The 22,000 square foot expansion will see the total floor area of GTC extend to 72,000 square feet, with the number of floors in the facility growing from two to four.

The office space for start-ups in Galway city was established 25 years ago, and so far has helped over 300 businesses to scale and grow. The 2,000 square metre expansion, which is being significantly funded by Enterprise Ireland, will see the total floor area of Galway Technology Centre (GTC) extend to almost 7,000 square metres, with the number of floors in the facility growing from two to four.
