Veterinary researchers to receive top accolade at graduation Professor Craig Johnson and Professor John Munday are receiving the degree for their research. Two veterinary scientists will each be awarded a Doctor of Science, one of the highest academic accolades, at Massey University’s Manawatū graduation this week. Professor Craig Johnson and Professor John Munday are receiving the degree for their research into animal anaesthetics and animal cancer, respectively. They are among the more than 1000 students who will graduate across five ceremonies in Palmerston North this week. A total of 1072 graduates will cross the stage, including 40 receiving doctoral degrees and 119 receiving master’s degrees at ceremonies held at the Regent on Broadway in Palmerston North. Ceremonies begin on the afternoon of 3 May and continue twice daily until 5 May.

Dr Margaret Saimo-Kahwa, the lead developer of the vaccine,  on Tuesday said the development started in 2005 with a seed grant from the Dutch Research Council,  but the government of Uganda through the Presidential Initiative on Science and Technology took interest and continued providing financial support to date.

Applications are pouring in for a little-known program within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Officials are expecting more interest this year, and they’re hoping it continues to highlight the importance of public health. “Over the years, we’ve brought in 1500 future physicians and 600 future veterinarians,” says Kelly Cordeira. She heads up the Epidemiology Elective Program at the CDC. “It’s meant to provide students with the opportunity to gain experience with applied epidemiology in public health through a hands-on experience and mentorship by CDC scientists,” Cordeira said.
