Beckwourth Complex Fire grows 10,000 acres - almost 25,000 acres burn, 10% containment

Fire as seen from the Alert Tahoe Wildfire Cameras Friday The fires burning in the Beckwourth Complex have now consumed 24,525 acres and it is 11 percent contained. The Sugar Fire within the Complex had significant fire growth yesterday (approx. 10,000 acres). SW wind alignment (plume dominated) and receptive fuels were the contributing factors of fire spread and intensity. Fire behavior included wind driven runs, group torching and long-range spotting. The weather will become hotter and dryer with a forecasted heat wave this weekend. Fuel moistures remain critically low, and relative humidities as low as 10%. The fire remained active all night, progressing east towards Adam’s Peak where it crossed the escarpment west of Doyle. The fire is burning around the Frenchman Lake with numerous spot fires on the eastern side of the lake. Crews conducted strategic firing operations for structure protection north of Frenchman Lake. Fire is pushing to Dixie Lookout to the north. Firefight

Results of the study will help identify potential enhancements to promote the safe passage of wildlife. The study is expected to begin in August. The research will analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of wildlife movements and roadkill along Highway 101 through the Gaviota Pass corridor using systematic monitoring and roadkill surveys, along with assessments of existing infrastructure and surrounding land use. Caltrans plans to conduct the study along the 101 corridor at Gaviota Pass from approximately the Nojoqui summit to Mariposa Reina. The area has experienced a higher level of roadkill, which include mountain lion and black bear. This area for wildlife habitat connectivity has been identified as a priority landscape linkage area.

Caltrans Officials Say Schedule Change Increased Productivity at Last Chance Grade

Caltrans Officials Say Schedule Change Increased Productivity at Last Chance Grade Caltrans crews were able to work with greater efficiency at Last Chance Grade as a result of a change in schedule. Photo courtesy of Caltrans District 1 Previously: ### With productivity “skyrocketing” at Last Chance Grade just two days after Caltrans implemented four-hour closures on U.S. 101, Project Manager Sebastian Cohen told Del Norters that schedule adjustments were a possibility, though he couldn’t say when. Bridge work at Hunter Creek south of the slide presents further challenges for motorists and making adjustments, including doing the project at night, wouldn’t make a difference, Cohen told the public at a town hall meeting Wednesday.
