Edinson Cavani explains decision to renew Manchester United contract

Edinson Cavani’s contract extension at Manchester United has been confirmed by the club.
The Uruguayan’s new deal runs until June 2022, and this ends a period of uncertainty for the striker.

Cavani said: “Over the season, I have developed a great affection for the club and everything that it represents. I feel a deep bond with my team-mates and the staff who work behind the scenes here. They give me extra motivation every day and I know that, together, we can achieve special things.

After Sunday’s postponement, Manchester United return to action on Thursday against Roma in the Europa League semi-finals.
United of course have a 6-2 lead from the first leg, which should mean that this game is a formality if they do a professional job.
Sunday’s events also mean that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side should be fully rested and refreshed as they bid to qualify for their first major final since 2018.

Bruno Fernandes summed up United’s mindset heading into the tie with a message sent on social media. He says the team are going to Italy to win.

Manchester United could be building something special. That’s how it looked last week when the team demolished Roma 6-2.
But there are worries that two players at the heart of the victory, Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba, could leave the club.
Cavani is yet to decide on a new contract, while Pogba has just one year left on his deal, which could force United into an unwanted decision this summer.
Bruno Fernandes is desperate for both teammates to stay. Speaking at United’s press conference, he warned that replacing the pair could be impossible without breaking the bank.

While all the drama was unfolding at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, and the teams were stuck in the Lowry Hotel, the team managers still had to submit teamsheets to officials.
As are protocols, the team sheets needed to be given to the Premier League an hour ahead of kick-off time, and both United and Liverpool complied with this, with the Premier League publishing both teams’ starting XIs.
The MEN reported United’s announced team, despite the situation looking like there was little chance of the game actually being played.
