McBroom, Markkanen meet with Houghton County board | News, Sports, Jobs

gneese@mininggazette.com HOUGHTON The Copper Country’s state legislators met with the Houghton County Board Friday morning to discuss COVID-19 restrictions and other issues in the county at a special meeting Friday. The meeting was the idea of State Sen. Ed McBroom, R-Vulcan, who answered questions from the board along with Rep. Greg Markkanen, R-Hancock. McBroom had intended to meet with counties after taking office in 2019, he said, but had been delayed first by legislative work surrounding mental health, then by COVID-19. McBroom said he hopes to hold the meetings quarterly. COVID-19 had scrambled the dynamics in the legislature even beyond the partisan divide, McBroom said.

gjaehnig@mininggazette.com CALUMET When Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw (CLK) Schools purchased the former Aspirus At Home building, at 311 Sixth Street, in the village in 2020, it was not with any intension of interfering with zoning, marijuana ordinances or buffer zones around school buildings. In fact, recreational or medical marijuana businesses within Calumet Village, or Calumet Township, had nothing to do with the school district purchasing the building that was, decades before, Pat Campioni’s grocery store. Superintendent Christopher Davidson said if anything, it was an afterthought. “I didn’t think of it at the time,” he said, “but then as conversations were going, the focus of our conversations was on our main campus and the proximity to certain buildings within the village limits, then I said, kind of like an ‘Oh! Geez, by the way: we just purchased this building that may or may not factor into it. ”

Percy Daniels retiring from GPTC after 56 years, will have bus named after him

Percy Daniels has worked for the Gary Public Transportation Corp. so long he actually pre-dates it, getting his start with the predecessor company, Gary Transit, Inc., in the 1960s. After more than 56 years at the bus service, the longtime parts manager in the maintenance department is finally retiring. His longtime employer plans to honor him by naming a bus after him. We want to do something special for his retirement, but the pandemic doesn t let us bring everybody together, General Manager Jerome Parker said. He s been here long before I started in 1979. He s been doing the same job for a number of years. I ve always been impressed with his dedication.
