ROTTERDAM – Throughout the winter season traditional indoor track venues have been closed to local high school meets, but on Monday afternoon Mohonasen girls’ track coach Bill Sherman plowed the way for a successful competition.
Sherman cleared the Mohonasen eight-lane outdoor track of snow and ice, hosting Schalmont Monday afternoon outdoors on the Mighty Warriors’ track.

After all, there’s no topping perfection.
The right-hander from Schalmont High School rolled his second career 300 game when the Sabres opened their Colonial Council schedule last week with a team victory over La Salle Institute at Sportsman’s Bowl in Rotterdam.
“My goal for the season was a 300 game, an 800 [three-game] series and to lead the Colonial Council in all of the divisions,” Squires said.
The 16-year-old took care of that first objective with 12 consecutive strikes, which included only a brief moment of trepidation on his first ball in the 10th frame.
Then, COVID-19 struck.
Now, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association has cancelled New York State championships for the 2020-21 season and a start date for some sort of season still hangs in the balance.

For Lansingburgh, the priority has been to get students back into the classroom, then get them back on the court.
âSince the beginning of the school year, our intentions as a district were to open all of our buildings. With the notice of our state aid getting held back, we were unable to do that and right now we only have one building that is currently in-person instruction, Turnpike Elementary school,â said Lansingburgh Athletic Director Sean Colfer. âThe rest of our grades, 3-12, are completely remote.â

The start date for Section II high school bowling matches has been pushed back, and once they get going, boys’ and girls’ teams will compete with a variety of safety measures including virtual matches.
The official start date for the winter season in Section II is Monday, but no Section II bowling matches are slated for that opening week, which is normally the case. Section II’s first matches are set to begin Dec. 21, while some schools won’t start playing until the first week of January.
