Liquid nitrogen (N) has seen a resurgence in popularity recently. At the Teagasc malting barley conference, Richie Hackett busted some of the myths around its use and gave solid advice for those considering a change.
The first thing made very clear was that “it’s not a foliar fertiliser, it’s a soil-acting fertiliser”.
Richie explained that the objective is to get N into the soil so that the plants can get it from the soil.
As a result, it needs to be applied in large droplets that will bounce off the leaf, so a change of nozzle or a move to streamers is needed on a sprayer.

Farmers have been called on to cease setting illegal fires as the open period for burning gorse has now ended.
Approximately 50ha of uplands were destroyed in a blaze that spread rapidly across Scarr Mountain in Co Wicklow, overlooking Lough Dan on Sunday, 7 March.
Areas of the Slieve Bloom Mountains in Co Laois were also damaged on the same day by a wildfire.
Speaking at the site of the blaze in Wicklow, Minister of the State for Heritage Malcolm Noonan stated that such events are a “massive draw on emergency services”.

As one of our most precious resources, it s important we do all we can to minimise the waste and pollution of our water supplies.
With this in mind, Teagasc has organised Water Quality Week to raise awareness of such issues.
Set to run from 22 to 26 March, the initiative coincides with World Water Day on 22 March.
Organised in collaboration with dairy processing co-ops and the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO), the initiative will provide water quality-focused information and advice to farmers.
A number of webinars are planned with the aim of helping to minimise losses of nutrients, sediment and pesticides to water from farming practices.
