A potential new electric and gas franchise agreement between the city of San Diego and San Diego Gas & Electric follows up on an original set of requirements the city laid out in March and features changes including more payments from SDG&E and a provision that would make it easier for the city to exit the deal after 10 years.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria’s office released some details Friday of a potential electric and gas franchise agreement between the city and San Diego Gas & Electric, with an eye toward attracting the support of at least six of the nine City Council members needed to finalize the deal.
“If approved by the council, these agreements put us on a path toward environmental sustainability, community equity and financial certainty, while providing an easy offramp for the city,” Gloria said in a statement. “This is a better deal for the city and for ratepayers.”
The tentative agreement comes after three weeks of multiple negotiating sessions between the Gloria administration and SDG&E executives and follows up on an original set of requirements the city laid out in March when it formally put the franchise agreement up for bid.

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Mayor Todd Gloria will present his proposed $4.6 billion budget to the San Diego City Council Tuesday with the intent on highlighting nonprofit and small business loans, building “sexy” streets, reducing police overtime, investing in the city’s Climate Equity Fund and a focus on supporting the San Diego Convention Center.
His intention is to jumpstart the city’s economy and pave a path for an equitable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.
“My Back to Work SD budget prioritizes an equitable recovery from the impacts of the pandemic while setting the foundation of a brighter future for all of us,” Gloria said at a news conference in front of a Mexican restaurant in City Heights hard hit by the pandemic.
