Take a peek around any trade show that caters to apparel, housewares, really any consumer product under the sun, and you’ll probably notice that a good many of those companies boast how eco-friendly they are.
Their T-shirts are made with 100% recycled cotton and the production process uses X% less water than others. Their drinkware products are made from recycled single-use bottles salvaged from the Chesapeake Bay.
It all sounds great, because it is. And many consumers feel better when we know we’re buying a product from an ethical company. But it’s not always easy to verify that a company’s environmental promises are anything beyond surface-level.
F&B brands urged to sign up to new eco-label certification program to push on-pack zero carbon emission claims
03 Mar 2021 - As industry accelerates toward net-zero emissions, non-profit organization Climate Neutral is piloting an eco label that certifies a product’s carbon neutrality. It will ensure that companies and brands are held accountable for their carbon emissions – helping products stand out from competitors on the shelf.
The new label “Climate Neutral Certified” joins similar schemes including USDA Organic, Non-GMO and Fair Trade.
“The F&B industry is extremely competitive, and it’s often hard for brands to set themselves apart at the point of purchase,” Austin Whitman, CEO of Climate Neutral tells
Appalachian Gap Distillery making big changes to reduce carbon footprint
Vermont Business Magazine VGS and Appalachian Gap Distillery announced today the distillery has committed to offset half of its natural gas usage with VGS’s first-in-the-nation renewable natural gas (RNG) to produce its quality craft spirits. This announcement is another step in the Company’s progress towards becoming certified by Climate Neutral, a trusted NetZero certification for consumer brands through a non-profit organization whose mission is to decrease global carbon emissions.
“We will be certified Climate Neutral this year, which is the best way to be sure our operations reflect our values, one of which is responsibility to the planet and its inhabitants.” said Lars Hubbard, co-founder of Appalachian Gap Distillery. “It only made sense to include RNG as part of our efforts. We have committed to having sustainability be a core value in all of our operations.
SMC grad helps Numi Organic Tea make its global mark

But when Brian Durkee, who was recently promoted to CEO after several years serving as the company s president, traveled around the world on behalf of Oakland-based Numi Organic Tea, it was not without its dangerous moments. On a trip to Egypt in 2011, Durkee was there working on the chamomile and mint products when a revolution took place. I wasn t allowed to leave the hotel. I had to grow a beard and wore a scarf around my head. When I traveled, I had to have armed guards with me. If something went wrong there was no infrastructure to get us out of trouble. It was like something out of an Indiana Jones movie!
