Locally owned and bred Marway has rightly earned the elite âRockhampton Rocketâ moniker after his devastating win in the $200K Wagga Town Plate (1200m) on Thursday.
Bred by his Rockhampton owners Greg and Elaine Sturgiss who race the Hemingway 5YO in conjunction with Paul and Barbara Wagner (Springsure), Marway has become a revelation since taking up residency in Sydney.
With three Sydney wins prior to his Wagga winning demolition, his astute Randwick trainer Mark Newnham branded Marwayâs Plate win as âfantasticâ while admitting he has been âlucky to get himâ.

The doors are set to close on a Rockhampton CBD business.
CQ Blasters, which sells gel blasters and accessories, will trade at 118 East Street for the last time on Saturday.
Damien Geyer - a partner in the business which is owned by Leigh Vickerstaffe - said various factors were to blame, with a lack of parking in the CBD a major one.
The business partners had rented the store since mid-2019.
Mr Geyer said their Gladstone shop in Tank Street remained open, and the leases on the playing fields in both Rockhampton and Gladstone would continue.
“It was a difficult decision, but businesses need to make money,” he said.

Subscriber only The recent passing (April 11) of John Cooney 82, one of Rockhampton s most successful racehorse trainers over the past three decades has evoked countless memories. John Cooney was one of those larger-than-life racecourse characters, a graduate of the old school of horse trainers, horsemen and cattlemen. Mention of his name and immediately a dossier of top-class racehorses that he trained so successfully spring to mind. Such names as the prolific, and I mean prolific, winning sprinters Bay Poet and Go Garla are just a few. John, ably assisted by his late wife Margaret, won 26 races with Bay Poet in distances ranging from 800m to 1200m.

Rockhampton’s racing darling Sweet Dolly has arrived back at trainer Kevin Hansen’s North Rockhampton stables for a lengthy rehabilitation.
The winner of her only four races, including the $500K The Jewel at her last outing at the Gold Coast in mid-March, Sweet Dolly has undergone surgery on her near fore sesamoid.
Trainer Hansen, on the concern of track rider Shayla Evans, sought vet’s advice after Sweet Dolly did not feel right during training at Callaghan Park a fortnight ago.

The Graeme Green-trained Master Jamie commenced his Stradbroke campaign with a fighting 0.6 lengths third to Zaniah in last Saturdayâs (L) Ascot Handicap (100om) at Eagle Farm.
Ridden for the first time by Brisbaneâs Taylor Marshall, after a four-month racing respite, Master Jamie displayed all his trademark tenacity to be right in the finish.
