ChessBase Magazine #201: Carlsen under pressure - A review by Nagesh Havanur

The ChessBase Magazine offers a window to the world of professional chess and it also provides arsenal for the tournament player. This issue offers games from two major events, the Magnus Carlsen Invitational and the Opera Euro Rapid, 547 games, 3 opening videos, 12 opening surveys, demo, lectures and exercises for training. It also includes games annotated by Anish Giri, Wesley So and Jan-Krzysztof Duda to mention a few. Prof. Nagesh Havanur takes a look.

Raising the floor

Now that we know that Ian Nepomniachtchi will be Magnus Carlsen’s next challenger for the World Championship title, it’s time to start getting ready for the big match. Star columnist Jon Speelman has another go at prediction, claiming that “Carlsen is surely the favourite, but not, I think, by that much: no more than 60-40, and perhaps just 55-45”. | Photo: Lennart Ootes / Grand Chess Tour

Ovi-ready | ChessBase

€19.95 Predictions, predictions [Note that Jon Speelman also looks at the content of the article in video format, here embedded at the end of the article.] With the Candidates Tournament resuming the day after this comes out, all eyes are turning to Yekaterinburg. So I thought, perhaps somewhat foolishly, that I’d add my voice to the hubbub of predictions, thus preparing to get egg all over my face or, as you might say, becoming “Ovi-ready”. More than a year after the first half, this is almost a completely separate tournament, which feels like a race with significant handicaps. The standings have been reprised in many places elsewhere, so I’ll just run down the list starting with the two leaders, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.
