Deputy cleared in fatal shooting of suspect in Kewaskum rampage
Prosecutors have cleared a Washington County sheriff s deputy in the fatal shooting of a suspect who killed two people in Kewaskum last month.
Sheriff Martin Schulteis announced Wednesday that Washington County District Attorney Mark Bensen had reviewed the state Department of Justice s investigation of the incident and concluded Deputy Lee Goodman s shooting of Nicholas S. Pingel was justifiable.
Goodman, who has nine years of law enforcement experience, had been on administrative leave since the incident, but returned to full duty this week, according to Schulteis.
Pingel, 30, of West Bend, had a long history of mental health and legal problems. On Feb. 3, he stole a car left running but unattended in West Bend, before crashing in Kewaskum. He stole a car from a woman who had stopped to see what happened, then crashed again.

KEWASKUM - Forest View Road cuts a straight line through quiet farmland north of West Bend before gently rising and twisting into a wooded area with several homes, some tucked inside.
These days, the fields are snow-covered, more peaceful than ever.
On Feb. 3, a mid-afternoon spasm of violence ruptured the area in ways the local folks struggle to comprehend. A 30-year-old man, out of prison for two months and struggling for years with mental health issues, careened down the road in a stolen car and rolled the vehicle. He clambered from the wreck and began to go house to house, desperate to grab another car.
