Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Justin “The Highlight” Gaethje have combined for 11 post-fight bonuses over their last nine fights. That’s not a typo. They have more bonuses than fights over that span. Now, at UFC on ESPN+ 16, these two entertaining lightweights will attempt to live up to the hype. This showdown is as important to the top of the division as any non-title fight in recent history. Its importance can only be topped by its potential for unforgettable action.
After suffering his first two professional losses in back-to-back outings against Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje has bounced back with a pair of first-round knockouts over James Vick and Edson Barboza. Cerrone was on a three-fight winning streak and looking better than ever after returning to the 155-pound weight class until dropping a “Fight of the Night” affair to Tony Ferguson at UFC 238. Cerrone will try to replicate the success he had the last time he fought in Canada when he soundly

So, is Jorge Masvidal really the best option for Kamaru Usman right now? Can Alexa Grasso get a title bid going at flyweight? And is there any chance the UFC will need Kelvin Gastelum to sub in for Robert Whittaker or Paulo Costa?
To answer those questions – and a couple other things – I’ll be using the classic Silva/Shelby fight booking methodology from the UFC of years past. That means pitting winners against winners, losers against losers, and similarly tenured talent up against one another. Hopefully, by following that model, a few of these bout ideas will actually make it off the page and into the Octagon. Now, let’s get to the fights!

It appears as though Jake Paul will be boxing former UFC fighter Ben Askren in the coming months. This development comes after Paul exploded on the combat sports scene with a devastating knockout over former NBA player Nate Robinson (who is much smaller than Paul and seemingly had little to no boxing training).

Vettori (16-4-1) is currently riding a four-fight win streak, with wins during that stretch over Jack Hermansson, Karl Roberson, Andrew Sanchez, and Cezar Ferreira. Overall, the 27-year-old Italian is 6-2-1 overall in the UFC. He is currently the No. 5 ranked middleweight in the UFC and a win over Till would push him one step closer to getting a title shot rematch against UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.
Till (18-3-1) is a former UFC welterweight title challenger who has been up-and-down since moving up to middleweight in 2019. Since making the move up to 185lbs, Till is just 1-1 with a split decision win over Kelvin Gastelum and a unanimous decision win over Robert Whittaker. Till is currently the No. 4 ranked middleweight in the UFC, and a win over Vettori would keep him in the top-five.
