New Haven firefighter died doing the job he always dreamed of doing, officials say

NEW HAVEN Firefighter Ricardo Torres was recalled Wednesday as someone who had a deep love help of helping others, a warm sense of humor and a lifelong goal of being part of fire service.
Torres died Wednesday while fighting a fire on Valley Street. He joined the department in July 2019, serving on Engine 6.
Local 825 union President Patrick Cannon, backed by dozens of firefighters, said Wednesday the men and women of the department were hurting.
Torres “was doing the job he always dreamed of doing,” Cannon said, and paid with his life.

25 years of dedicated service to the City of New Haven officially ended at about 2 PM and Duff says he is looking forward to retirement.

The percentage of fentanyl-involved overdose deaths continued to be a problem in 2020, a Connecticut Department of Public Health report says. Fentanyl-involved overdose deaths increased significantly in 2019 to 82 percent, compared to the previous years of 2015 to 2018.
