Surfside condo collapse live updates: Death toll at 60; Wade visits; what about taxes? David J. Neal, Devoun Cetoute, Miami Herald
Rescue crews continue to search through the rubble, but now do so without hope of finding anyone alive under the collapsed Champlain Towers South oceanfront condo tower in Surfside, the town immediately north of Miami Beach. Part of the apartment building with 12 residential floors collapsed June 24. The rest was demolished Sunday night.
People with loved ones at the condo, missing or safe, should call 305-614-1819 to notify officials. Anyone who lives at the Champlain Towers and is safe is asked to complete a Wellness Check form to help Miami-Dade County keep track of tenants.

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Grand jurors have indicted a 25-year-old South Florida man for first-degree murder in the shooting death of his 92-year-old neighbor.
Wesley James Perez was arrested in March 2020, two days after the body of Fernando Frias was found during a welfare check at his home in Pembroke Pines.
Police say Frias was shot 11 times.
Neighbors had called 911 after hearing gunshots.
An incoherent caller also dialed in but kept hanging up. Police traced the call to Perez’s home.
Police traced those calls to Perez‘s home. When they arrived at his home, they found a fully-clothed Perez in the swimming pool rambling in Spanish. He was saying things like, “Fernando, do you know who I am,” “25 years,” and “40 by 40,” the arrest report said.
Officers were not able to make sense of what Perez was saying. So they took him to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, unaware then that Frias had been shot next door.
The next day, one of Frias’s sons found his father’s body during a welfare check after not hearing from him, the report said.
