A previously unknown species of dinosaur has been discovered by scientists in Chile’s barren Atacama desert, an area the herbivore would have known millions of years ago as dense with lush foliage.
The remains of Arackar licanantay, which means “Atacama bones” in the Kunza language, was discovered 47 miles south of the city of Copiapo by a team of geologists led by Carlos Arevalo.
The titanosaur appears to have had a small head but a long neck and tail, as well as an unusually flat back compared with others like it.

SANTIAGO Scientists in Chile’s parched Atacama desert, the world’s driest, have discovered the remains of a previously unknown species of dinosaur that millions of years ago lived among lush greenery in what is now a moonscape of rock and sand.
A team led by Chilean geologist Carlos Arevalo unearthed the remains of Arackar licanantay, which means “Atacama bones” in the Kunza language, 75 kilometres south of the desert city of Copiapo. The so-called titanosaur had a small head and long neck and tail, as well as an unusually flat back compared with others like it.

Fossils of new dinosaur species found in Chile 2 minutes read
Santiago, Apr 19 (EFE).- The Chilean Culture Ministry on Monday announced the discovery of a new species of dinosaur measuring an estimated 6.3 meters (20.7 feet) in length, that lived in what is now the northern Atacama desert region during the final phase of the Cretaceous Period, between 66 and 80 million years ago.
The fossilized specimen, dubbed Arackar licanantay (which means “Atacama bones” in the Kunza language), belongs to the group of titanosaurs, quadruped herbivores with a small head, long neck and long tail.
Several species within this group are presently among the largest land animals ever to walk the Earth, although the one found in Chile is one of the smaller members of that family, relatively speaking.
