Sinn Féin TD for Carlow Kilkenny, Kathleen Funchion, has urged cross-party support for Sinn Féin’s motion calling for an emergency response to the accelerating mental health crisis, which will be heard in the Dáil on Wednesday.
Pre-pandemic mental health waiting lists were already at crisis point, but the avalanche of depression, isolation, loneliness and anxiety since the onset of Covid-19 has overwhelmed services.
Teachta Funchion said: “Sinn Féin has engaged with service providers, service users and advocacy groups in County Kilkenny. What we are witnessing here in Kilkenny is being mirrored across the state - alarming increases in depression, isolation, loneliness and anxiety.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) have confirmed that 21 patients were waiting for a bed at Saint Luke s General Hospital Carlow/Kilkenny this morning.
13 of these patients are based in the Emergency Department while the remaining 8 are based on other wards.
There was a total of 191 patients nationwide waiting for beds this morning.
University Hospital Limerick (UHL) tops the list, with 38 patients impacted.

A new fund has been launched to invite local authorities and creative practitioners to put their skills of engagement to the cultural challenge of climate change.
Kilkenny Minister of State Malcolm Noonan has welcomed the launch of Creative Climate Action by his colleague Minister Catherine Martin on behalf of the Creative Ireland Programme in collaboration with the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications.

There has been a rise in domestic violence incidents in Offaly and Laois since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Getting help to victims of domestic violence and supports in place is more crucial now than it ever has been.
There can be nothing more frightening than being in a domestic abusive relationship and being afraid to leave or feeling that there is no one to help.
Unfortunately, there still seems to be a “sure it’s none of my business” attitude in the public domain. The key message all State and voluntary stakeholders are asking is to report your concerns as this may be the first chance to help a victim escape the situation, and that if you are a victim of domestic abuse to report it.
