+ January 30, 2021 MORE than a month after a deadly landslide hit the Carmen Pit of Carmen Copper Corp. in Toledo City, authorities have yet to recover the bodies of six missing workers.
Biga Barangay Captain Pedro Sepada, Jr. on Friday, Jan. 29, 2021, said the search and retrieval operations are challenging because the ground remains unstable and the cracks are widening.
“The search and retrieval operations continue. But the ground is still unstable. A portion above the landslide continues to move,” he said.

+ January 12, 2021 IMPOUNDED water from the Malubog Dam in Toledo City is to be released after its water capacity came close to reaching critical levels due to heavy rains on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021.
To avoid any possible untoward incidents related to the releasing of the Malubog Dam’s impounded water, Toledo City officials also ordered an immediate evacuation of residents living near the dam’s downstream area.
Roseller Layan, Toledo City public information officer, said Carmen Copper Corp. (CCC) is set to activate its flood control systems installed at the dam in order to release water.
“We really need to release the water so it doesn’t overflow during heavy rains. We need to maintain it at the right level,” Layan told Superbalita Cebu on Jan. 12.

File photo January 03, 2021 THE Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ) Cebu has called upon the Toledo City Government in southwestern Cebu to compel the Carmen Copper Corp. (CCC) to provide “enough” support to the families of Barangay Biga who have been evacuated after a deadly landslide occurred in a mining pit owned by the CCC in the barangay.
Teodorico Navea, PMCJ Cebu chapter convenor, said some evacuees complained about the “deplorable” state of the evacuation sites in Sitios Hag-it and Manokan.
“When we were there (on Dec. 31, 2020), many were insinuating that they might return to their homes because they could not sustain their lives there,” he said.
December 31, 2020 ALMOST two weeks after a landslide in the only active open-pit mine of Carmen Copper Corp. (CCC) in Toledo City killed four workers and left six others missing, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Central Visayas (MGB 7) has yet to disclose the cause of the incident.
Heart Rizarri, MGB 7 information officer, said in a message to SunStar Cebu on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, that the investigation on the Dec. 21 landslide incident was still ongoing.
She said further study will also be conducted before the MGB 7 can give its recommendation to the Toledo City Government on the fate of 400 families living near the site.
