(CBC) Saskatoon police found 18 impaired drivers and 300 sober drivers at a New Years Eve check stop.  The Saskatoon Police Service, Sask. Highway Patrol, Corman Park Police and Canadian Pacific Police set up the check stop.  Members of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) were on hand and thanked sober drivers. Police say they handed out 300 coupons for free pizza and other gifts.  Thirteen drivers were charged with being under the influence of either cannabis or cocaine, while five were under the influence of alcohol. Eighteen vehicles were impounded for different periods of time.

The large check stop was set up in partnership with Corman Park Police, Saskatchewan Highway Patrol and Canadian Pacific Police. Of the 18 impaired drivers, 13 were under the influence of either cannabis or cocaine, according to a news release from police. The remaining five drivers were under “alcohol-related” impairment. All 18 vehicles were impounded. Volunteers from the Saskatoon chapter of MADD Canada were also on hand to thank sober drivers and hand out 300 coupons for free pizza and other gifts.

Saskatoon police to set up New Year s Eve checkpoints

  SASKATOON The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) and other agencies plan to conduct sobriety checkpoints on New Year’s Eve. “Anyone needing to get around after consuming alcohol or drugs is encouraged to use one of many alternate services available, like public transit, ride share companies, taxis and designated driver services while respecting public health requirements,” SPS said in a news release. SPS will be joined by RCMP, Corman Park Police, Saskatchewan Highway Patrol and CP Rail Police. Volunteers from MADD Canada will also be on hand to thank drivers who choose to drive while sober. So far in December, 43 drivers have been charged or suspended for impaired driving in Saskatoon, police say.
