The seemingly never-ending rebuild of the Jane Byrne Interchange downtown continues, as does resurfacing on the outbound Kennedy Expressway. Interchanges on the Tri-State at I-57 and I-80 at U.S. 30 will also be rebuilt, with bridge replacements on I-80.

IT HAS been almost three weeks since hundreds of shops, pubs and cafes reopened their doors for their first time this year – but many business owners say they are still facing an uncertain future. On April 12, hairdressers, pubs and gyms reopened, and non-essential retailers were once again allowed to welcome customers through their doors. Big chains such as Primark and TKMaxx enjoyed booming sales during the first week of reopening, but many smaller, independent businesses in Brighton are still waiting for the post-lockdown surge. A 20-year-old woman was struck by a bullet Wednesday night in Shelby

Police were conducting a traffic stop just before 10 p.m. when they heard shots fired nearby.  Officers responded to the 400 block of Gardner Street where they found a woman outside suffering from a gunshot wound. The incident began as an altercation between two men, but the woman ended up being struck by at least one bullet in her upper torso, according to Shelby Police.  The woman was taken to Atrium Health in Charlotte and was in stable condition Thursday afternoon, police said.  Shell casings at the scene showed that at least 10 shots were fired.  Investigators have taken out warrants against Kuama Deondre Moore. Already being sought on a probation violation, the 20-year-old Mooresboro man will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting injury with intent to kill and possession of a firearm by a felon. 

Anger after Brighton Council fines tea worker for flyering

A BUSINESS owner has spoken out after council workers threatened to call the police on an employee giving out free tea samples. Bird and Blend handed out free brews on its doorstep in Brighton’s North Laine to celebrate National Tea Day last week. Brighton and Hove City Council’s environmental enforcement team spotted a worker in Gardner Street and slapped her with a £150 on-the-spot fine. They claim a how to make at home” information card handed out with the tea samples amounted to flyering. Bird and Blend Tea s owner, Krisi Smith, said her worker was told if she did not give her own personal details and arrange payment immediately, they would call the police.
