Last month Europa Distribution was part of two major events that open the European film industry’s spring calendar: Cartoon Movie (9-11 March) and Sofia Meetings (17-24 March). For the association it was the occasion to experiment for the first time with all-digital workshops. The gatherings, however virtual, felt to all participants like friendly occasions to meet again after a long and challenging year. During both workshops, distributors exchanged information, advices and best practices.

Shadows, winner of the Eurimages Co-Production Development Prize at Cartoon Movie

Nicolas Schmerkin has been heading Paris-based company Autour de Minuit, specialised in animation and equipped with two studios (one of them in Angoulême). It is behind, among other titles, the 2010 Oscar-winning animated short film

Cartoon Movie is the world’s most important co-production and pitching forum for European animated feature films. It takes place in Bordeaux and this year 16 European countries overall took part. A total of 55 film projects were presented, with 21 from France and nine from Spain.
He says that Spain has a lot of talented people who had to emigrate to either the United States, Ireland or the UK because there was not enough production in Spain . But according to him, part of these people have returned back home and they have established new animation studios and those studios are now the ones who are launching new projects, really powerful and good ones .
