Cardinal Mario Grech will preside over a mass at Vittoriosa’s Church of the Annunciation on Sunday, as the Dominican church marks the 8th centenary from the death of St Dominic.
The mass will be held at 9.30am and president George Vella will lead the congregation.
Cardinal Grech will also light a jubilee candle, which will be kept lit throughout the year.
Later in the evening, a musical program led by the Prince of Wales Own Philharmonic Society will see a new hymn dedicated to St Dominic performed for the first time. The hymn was versed by Fr Alan Joseph Adami and composed by Raymond Sciberras. That event will begin at 7pm.

Cardinal Prospero Grech, died on December 30, 2019, aged 94.
The Augustinian scholar who became the second cardinal in Maltese history was one of 22 cardinals appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in February 2012. Once described as “possibly the most intelligent man alive” by English priest Fr Alexander Lucie-Smith in an article in the Catholic Herald, Cardinal Grech served as a professor at the Augustine Institute in Rome. In 1970, he co-founded the Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum attached to the Lateran University in Rome and served as its president from 1971 to 1979. In 2011, he was appointed a Companion of the National Order of Merit.

Quoting Pope Francis, he added, “moralism will not save people”.
A former bishop of Gozo, Grech was appointed cardinal by the Pope last month. He currently serves as the secretary general of the Synod of Bishops in the Vatican, a post he formally took up last September.
Asked how the Church can adapt to keep up with an ever-changing society without losing sight of its identity, Grech said the Church has to be brave enough to bring about change where it is needed.
