Amy Nolan SURVIVORS have implored An Bord Pleanála to reject plans seeking to develop apartments and a creche on a former mother and baby home estate in Cork. In November last year, MWB Two Ltd lodged a planning application with the planning board for 179-apartments in three blocks, as well as a creche, on privately owned land on the former Bessborough estate.

Proposal to avoid remains in situ at Bessborough

Developers have proposed that no development should take place over any children s burial ground with human remains in situ at the former Mother and Baby Home at Bessborough, Co Cork, where it is planned that 179 apartments be built. The barrister for developer MWB Two Ltd made the proposal, one of a number conditions suggested in a submission to the oral hearing by An Bord Pleanála, which reconvened today. David Holland SC for the developer circulated two documents at the hearing. These included a memo with their proposals for planning conditions and a document on an aerial photograph. Mr Holland outlined these changes. He said they wanted to provide some form of memorialisation but said that they did not want to impose their view.

Social Affairs & Religion Correspondent An expert in ordnance survey mapping has told the oral hearing into a planning application for 179 apartments in the grounds of a former mother-and-baby home at Bessborough in Cork he believes an area marked as a children s burial ground on a 1950s ordinance survey map is correct. John Clarkin, who has worked for Ordinance Survey Ireland for over 40 years, was brought before the oral hearing by David Dodd BL - who is representing the Cork Survivors and Supporters Alliance. Developer MWB Two Ltd has applied to An Bord Pleanála under the Strategic Housing Initiative for permission to build 179 apartments on a 3.7 acre site on the grounds of Bessborough.
