And while Google Play Music was the service that so many people loved on Android Auto, the experience with YouTube Music was far from flawless, and this is how some ended actually making the switch to Spotify.
But on the other hand, Spotify is already the number one music service out there. As of December 31, 2020, Spotify has 155 million subscribers, 345 million monthly active users, over 70 million tracks, and more than 4 billion playlists. And it obviously keeps growing and growing, with the service now available in no less than 178 markets across the globe.
But while Spotify is growing, it’s also getting more expensive.
After years of rumors, confirmation and vague descriptions, Spotify has finally made its first piece of hardware available to select users. Even though the company revealed the full details on Car Thing earlier this month, it’s only a “limited release” right now. I’ve spent two weeks with Car Thing in my car (obviously), and can tell you one thing this dedicated Spotify player is really more of a controller for the app on your phone.
The backstory
Spotify first tipped its hand on an in-car music player in 2018. It offered a few Reddit users the opportunity to try a compact device that reportedly featured voice control and 4G connectivity. The company didn’t comment at the time, and it’s unclear if any units of this first circular device ever made it out into the wild.

The dreaded Spotify price hike has arrived in the UK and Europe
After months of rumors about a potential Spotify price hike, it s finally happening. Users in the UK and Europe have been sent emails with the bad news and the new pricing model is set to come into effect from June 2021 for current subscribers and from the end of April for new users. Depending on which plan you subscribe to, your monthly fee is set to go up by around £1-2 (€1-3).
This doesn t come as a huge surprise since the company was found surveying users about a possible price increase in recent months, but that will do little to soften the blow. I myself received the email below telling me I ll have to pay an extra £1 per month for my Premium Duo subscription.
