During the past week, Catawba Valley Community College was honored to host the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Womenâs Basketball Championship at the Tarlton Complex â an event that was moved to Hickory just short 12 days prior to its first tip off.
The tournament, which was originally scheduled to be held at St. Clair Community College in Port Huron, Mich., was moved due to an increase in COVID cases in St. Clair County in Michigan.
For those who arenât aware, national tournaments hosted by the NJCAA are usually awarded and bid on by colleges years before the events take place in order to plan this great undertaking, but under the current environment the move of the yearâs event had to happen quickly. The quality of the tournament could not be affected, and most importantly, the experience of the student-athletes was paramount. Catawba Valley Community College’s Nick Schroeder has been named a 2020-21 Junior/Community College Athletics Director of the Year (ADOY) award recipient by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
Schroeder is just the third athletic director in Region 10 to receive the honor – a list that also includes Dr. Christopher Parker, who is now the CEO of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Only 71 junior college athletic directors have won the honor all time.
“This is truly a great honor to be recognized by my fellow athletic directors for what we have created in the CVCC Red Hawks athletics program,” Schroeder said. “While it is my name listed on this honor, I can truly say this award represents everyone at CVCC from our President Dr. Garrett Hinshaw to our amazing coaches to all of the supportive and giving faculty and staff and most importantly all of our current and past student-athletes. Longtime Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Larry Putnam announced his resignation at Monday eveningâs work session of the Burke County Board of Education.
After nearly a decade altogether in the superintendent role, Putnam said he will join Hickoryâs Catawba Valley Community College in an executive vice president position. He doesnât yet know his final day with BCPS, but Putnam said he will start at CVCC on May 1.
At CVCC, Putnam will be tasked with being a close associate of President Garrett Hinshaw.
âIâll help President Hinshaw and the team at CVCC with anything they need help with,â Putnam said. âIt encompasses all things. Iâm looking forward to it.â
