Ruth Negga To Star In Josephine Baker Limited Series At ABC Signature From Dee Harris-Lawrence, Millicent Shelton & LeBron James’ SpringHill Company
EXCLUSIVE: The remarkable story of Josephine Baker, one of the most influential female entertainers of the 20th century, will be the subject of Josephine, a limited drama series in development at ABC Signature, with Ruth Negga attached to star as the legendary Jazz Age performer and civil rights activist.
Playing a famous singer will be nothing new to the Limerick-raised actress as she once portrayed Shirley Bassey in the 2011 BBC production Shirley to widespread acclaim. The part earned her an IFTA Award.
Written by Dee Harris-Lawrence and directed by Millicent Shelton (30 Rock), Josephine promises to be “a raw and unflinching look at the force of nature that was Josephine Baker, the biggest Black female artist of her time.”
Showbiz website Deadline says: “From international superstar and decorated WWII spy, to civil rights activist and flawed mother, Josephine delves into the raw talent, sexual fluidity, struggles and bold life of an icon.”

Charlie s Angels director McG will be at the helm of the first episode, and will also executive produce the show, which currently has a 12 episode order from 20th TV. The reboot will bring the original premise into the modern day with some tweaks, which will have U.S. Marshal Scott Turner (played by Josh Peck) inheriting a big unruly dog. He s not crazy about the idea at first, but realizes that the pet he didn t want may end up being the partner he needs, and the two become best buds (via Deadline).
