It s growing rapidly in our ever-ageing population - almost everyone will have a family member or know someone who suffers from some form of the disease. It s already the number one cause of death in Britain and for women in Australia and the same trend looks likely to happen here. Yet we don t talk about dementia much. Perhaps it s understandable as the conversation can be painful. Many patients find their own children and grandchildren become unrecognisable as they are reduced to a child-like state with only memories from their youth. Family members in turn watch helplessly as they are lost to their parents and grandparents. They see their loved ones become frustrated and frightened as they forget how to perform basic daily rituals.

Hawke s Bay Rugby Football Union Inc is welcoming applications this week for charities looking to have 2021 s charity jersey dedicated to them. Last September the Magpies departed from their traditional black-and-white hoops for a game, instead donning a checked jersey reminiscent of a farmer s swanny .

Each team member has their own story of how cancer has touched their lives, including team leader Jo Heap, WDHB s clinical nurse educator for the Maternal, Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Addiction Service (MICAMHAS). As the lead for our MICAMHAS & Friends team, I have a close friend, grandfather and two sisters-in-law who have passed away from cancer, as well as a parent who is currently suffering from it.
