NBN News | HISTORIC LAND CLAIM WIN AT PELICAN MARINA SITE

Bahtabah Local Aboriginal Land Council has won a land claim for a site at Pelican today, exactly five years since a marina collapsed into Lake Macquarie. The marina complex and popular restaurant, Milanos On the Lake sank into the water, with people inside escaping unharmed. Today, the Land Council is celebrating its successful native title claim. It’s crown land and has been unused, therefore under the land rights act, a claim could be made. Reporter Jane Goldsmith is speaking with Bahtabah Land Council about their plans, as well as Mayor Kay Fraser and Swansea MP Yasmin Catley. Tune in for more, tonight at six.

NBN News | LAKE MACQUARIE WELCOMED 40 NEW CITIZENS

True to this remark, hundreds of people were honored with Australian Citizenship this week. Locally, in Lake Macquarie, 40 new Australian citizens from right across the world were officially welcomed at an Australia Day ceremony at Rathmines Theatre. They come from the UK, New Zealand, Russia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, India, Israel, USA, France and Lithuania, just to name a few. Lake Macquarie Mayor, Cr Kay Fraser was pleased to welcome so many people who bring a vast array of culture to share with the community. “Welcoming people from all walks of life and all corners of the globe to Lake Macquarie enriches our community and makes us who we are today. We are proud of our diversity and of the welcoming nature of our city.”

NBN News | LAKE MAC FESTIVAL CANCELLED

2020 Lake Macquarie City Council has cancelled this year’s Lake Mac Festival due to the ongoing COVID-19 risk. After consultation with NSW Police, Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser admitted cancelling the event held over the Australia Day long weekend was a difficult decision. “We must keep people safe first and foremost… I believe this is the right one for our community,” Cr Fraser said. A COVID-safe Citizenship Ceremony will still take place as planned on Australia Day. More than 40 new citizens will be welcomed. “Welcoming people from all cultural backgrounds and walks of life adds diversity and richness to our community, and seeing their joy and pride as they become Australian citizens is a true privilege,” Fraser said.
