SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Legendary coach and basketball announcer Dick Vitale is hosting some of his top friends as part of his 16th annual gala to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Vitale is a champion of cancer awareness, fund raising and all things that benefit the Sarasota Community. In attendance will be several basketball coaches including Auburn’s Bruce Pearl and former Notre Dame women’s coach and Hall of Famer, Muffet McGraw.
At the 2008 Dick Vitale Gala, Bruce Pearl then the men s basketball coach at the University of Tennessee had the honor of introducing one of that year s honorees, Tennessee legend Pat Summitt, who was the leader in wins for NCAA Division I women s basketball coaches at the time of her 2012 retirement (1,098).
Pearl said he felt the power of the gala room. He saw all the good that the evening did, as Vitale and company raised $1.2 million that year in its fifth year of existence. And as he was leaving the event, his wife, Brandy Pearl, turned to him and said, Maybe you ll be an honoree someday.

Tigers coach Bruce Pearl said Wednesday Sills has signed an athletics financial aid agreement.
Sills, who played three seasons with the Razorbacks, has two years of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder averaged 7.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game last season for Arkansas, which advanced to the Elite Eight.
Sills was the only Arkansas player to play in all 98 games over the last three seasons. That makes him the most experienced SEC player coming back next season.
“Desi is a proven winner,” Pearl said. “He’s a fierce competitor and a tough, physical defender. He’s got the ability to create for himself as well as others. Playing in our up-tempo system should bring out the best of him. If he plays as well against others as he did against us, we hit the jackpot.”

So, when it dawned gray and damp, I’m thinking this feels appropriate.
Especially after a glorious Oaks and Derby Day that was much needed, for reasons I don’t need to explain.
After throwing myself into the Derbytime fray for decades, I’ve stepped back in recent times. Actually I’m usually in New Orleans, but my the JazzFest is currently set for October.
If they build it, I will come.
Even though I don’t go to the track, and party like it’s 1999, like I did in 1999, I love the energy, excitement, sense of community spirit those two minutes of racing bring to our burg. Other than, you know, almost getting knocked down walking into the grocery by a woman wearing a hat the size of a beach umbrella.
