Thunder-snow: A rare but spectacular pairing

THUNDER-SNOW made headline news after an electrical storm hit Scotland. Residents over a large area of Scotland including the Edinburgh area, were woken earlier this month by the explosive sound of thunder and extremely bright lightning flashes along with heavy snowfall. Thunderstorms in winter months can be spectacular in snowy conditions because the lightning reflects on the white stuff as it falls to the ground. But, is this type of weather phenomena unusual? Here in Britain it is relatively rare, but it does happen from time to time, for example in January 2004 a notable thunder-snow event hit southern England. This thunderstorm produced wet snowfall, hail, gusty winds and even a tornado tore through Combe Down village in Somerset. Folk in the community had great difficulty getting about for a while as the wet snow froze solid leading to icy conditions. A cold front with a squall line was to blame for this particular thunder-snow episode.
