Due to the challenges of COVID-19, post-secondary practicum students in Victoria have faced an unusual year. While many students have still been able to access the hands-on learning that practicums provide, they have faced difficulties around compliance with and clarity of public health guidance, decreased hands-on experience, and ambiguity around vaccine eligibility. According to Ralf St. Clair, dean of the UVic Faculty of Education, the pandemic has created a tense environment around practicums. “There’s a higher level of anxiety and worry,” said St. Clair. “There’s certainly worry on the part of the schools about having people they don’t know that aren’t part of the regular bubble suddenly coming into the school, and I don’t just mean teacher candidates. Placing the statue in the museum along with an accurate, as possible, description of Macdonald, his government and policies will provide a learning opportunity for all of us. It is not only time to take the statue out of storage; it is time we learn the positive and negative policies of his actions and as the adage says, “learn from our past”. By placing the statue in a public place such as Bastion Square, we are venerating the man and everything he stood for, forgetting that not everyone benefited from his actions and that such statues can be hurtful reminders of a past that favoured certain privileged groups over others.

Student creativity celebrates Camosun s 50th anniversary

VICTORIA, B.C. – When Camosun College invited students to get creative and help commemorate its 50 th anniversary celebrations this year, the resulting entries showed off the depth and breadth of talent. “The creativity, passion and talent of students at Camosun never ceases to amaze me,” explains Sherri Bell, President of Camosun. “We wanted to engage with students from all programs and courses and encourage them to show us what the 50 th anniversary theme ‘Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future’ means to them. The result was incredible!” The contest launched in January 2021 and closed in mid April with a total of 56 submissions. Submissions had to be original pieces created entirely by the students themselves.
