Marlo Ann Gade, 89, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away peacefully June 8, 2021 at Northwood Deaconess Health Center. Marlo Ann Powers was born on November 7th, 1931 in Walhalla, ND to James and Gladys (Moore) Powers. Marlo attended grade and middle school in Walhalla until moving to Fargo with her mother and grandparents in 1945. Marlo graduated from Fargo Central High School and then attended Moorhead State University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. She then taught Physical Education at Glenwood, Minnesota public schools before attending the University of North Dakota, where she completed a Master’s degree in physical education in 1957. After earning her Master’s degree, Marlo taught in the Department of Physical Education at UND from 1957 to 1964, initially as an instructor and later as an Assistant Professor. YOUNGSTOWN Barbara B. Amstutz, 85, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Park Vista Assisted Living.
Barb was born Nov. 14, 1935, in New York City (Staten Island), to the late William and Marion Behlen.
She grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Glen Ridge High School, where she was an All-State field hockey player. She attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, and was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She graduated with a B.A. degree in sociology and psychology. Barb then attended the Ohio State University and received a master’s degree in social work.
Barb began her career at Children’s Services in Cleveland, where she met her husband, retired attorney, C. John “Jack” Amstutz. They were married in Verona, N.J., on June 10, 1961. After marriage, she moved to Youngstown, where she worked for Children’s and Family Services, the Jewish Federation of Youngstown, the Youngstown Hearing and Speech Center and ended her career at the Hine Memorial Fund.
Changing Lives for the World
On Sept. 30, 2016, nearly 150 guests gathered to honor Robert ’55, ‘06 (Hon.) and Ellen ’54, ’06 (Hon.) Thompson in the very building named in the couple’s honor. The University’s first Lifetime Achievement Award was given to the Thompsons in recognition of their commitment to their alma mater and to the future of BGSU.
“How perfect to celebrate the Thompsons’ vision, generosity and kindness in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union,” said President Mary Ellen Mazey as she detailed the couple’s remarkable dedication to student success. “They serve as an example on how philanthropy at BGSU can change lives.”
Bob has said that BGSU changed his life because he met his Falcon Flame, Ellen, at a fraternity – sorority mixer while they were students here a generation ago. Ellen was a member of Gamma Phi Beta, the Swan Club and the Key yearbook staff. Bob was a member of Sigma Nu and the Arnold Air Society and was involved with football. Af
