Almost a year after the pandemic entered our lives, the list of restaurant closures has continued to grow and the farewell announcements haven’t become easier to process. When news hit Thursday that Eastern Standard, along with sister restaurants Island Creek Oyster Bar and The Hawthorne, had permanently shuttered, it was a gut punch to both occasional visitors and regular guests.
The iconic Kenmore Square restaurant within the Hotel Commonwealth helped jumpstart the careers of many in the Boston restaurant industry, with some taking to social media to share their own Eastern Standard memories.
“I remember the first time I sat at this bar,” Will Isaza, director of operations for Blossom Bar and Ivory Pearl in Brookline,” wrote on Instagram. “I’ll always remember that this was my education. …Tonight we’ll raise a few for you, with the hopes of seeing that name attached to another building.”
A teenager who punched a hole in a pub wall before an aggressive outburst at police has blamed a combination of alcohol and mental health concerns. Mitchell Shane Graham was at the Commonwealth Hotel in Roma at about 11.45pm on January 16 on a night out with friends when he suddenly became enraged. The Warwick Magistrates Court heard the 18-year-old punched a hole in an inside door, and was caught in the act by an employee who called police before the teen left the pub. Police prosecutor Steve de Lissa said officers caught up with the teenager outside only minutes later, who was unsteady on his feet and aggressive.
OLDSMAR â Prior to being elected in March 2019, Oldsmar Mayor Eric Seidel said the development of the downtown district was his top priority. When the City Council agreed to allow a local developer to build a boutique hotel, complete with rooftop bar and parking garage, on a portion of the 10-acre parcel adjacent to City Hall in May 2019, it appeared his campaign promise would soon become a reality.
But issues with the Simone Development Group arose from the start as the local, family-owned hotel builders presented preliminary plans that did not include the rooftop bar, something the council stressed was a priority for the project. According to officials, things went downhill from there, leading Seidel to issue an ultimatum to Simone late last year.
