Homicides include those investigated by Louisville Metro Police as well as other Jefferson County law enforcement agencies. All victims were from Louisville, unless otherwise noted.
This list is preliminary, and the number of homicides can change as authorities investigate the circumstances of each case, determining whether the slaying was criminal, justified, accidental or suicide. The Courier Journal has excluded cases deemed accidents, suicides, fatal overdoses or hit-and-run deaths.
So far in 2021, LMPD has investigated 43 homicides.

Progressive Reformer Challenges Richmond s Top Prosecutor

Richmond’s top prosecutor is facing a challenge from within her party. Commonwealth’s Attorney Colette McEachin, a Democrat, announced last month that she would seek re-election. Now Tom Barbour, a criminal defense attorney who calls himself a progressive reformer and innovator, is moving to unseat her in a June primary.
Barbour said the office lacks racial diversity, and has an inadequate system for holding police officers who are accused of misconduct accountable.

Police said their preliminary investigation found Brian Markis Handy, 34, was driving a 2009 Lexus ES350 in the southbound lanes on Metompkin Road. Police said speed was a factor in the crash.
State police investigate single vehicle accident that left two dead

ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. - On the evening of February 16, State Police responded to a report of a fatal car crash that happened in the 17100 block of Metompkin Road, south of Nelsonia Road.
State Police conducted an investigation and found that the single vehicle accident happened around 8:30 p.m. The driver, Brian Markis Handy, was traveling in the southbound lanes of Metompkin Road when he encountered an area of standing water, hydroplaned and lost control of the vehicle.
The vehicle, a 2009 Lexus ES350, then left the roadway striking a tree head on.
