At least 3 killed and 27 others hospitalized when overcrowded boat overturns off San Diego coast in apparent smuggling operation

At least three people were killed and at least 27 others were hospitalized after a boat believed to be smuggling people overturned Sunday morning off the coast of San Diego, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Multiple agencies including local lifeguards, the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Border Protection responded to the “mass casualty” emergency, officials said.
Jeff Stephenson, a spokesperson for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said at a Sunday afternoon press conference there was “every indication from our perspective that this was a smuggling vessel,” and the suspected smuggler was in custody. Three people are dead and nearly two dozen people were sent to hospitals after a suspected smuggling vessel overturned off the coast of San Diego on Sunday morning.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesperson Monica Munoz told CNN they received reports of a vessel that overturned near the Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma around 10:27 a.m. (1:27 p.m. ET).

At least two people died, and 23 others were hospitalized after a vessel overturned off the coast of San Diego. San Diego Fire-Rescue said they were working with multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, San Diego Fire Department, and San Diego Lifeguards, as they continue to search the water near the Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma.

The type of vessel that capsized is unknown, and authorities have not determined what caused it to overturn. Because the incident happened in waters that are under federal jurisdiction, federal agencies will handle the investigation.
