The Cabarrus Health Alliance is warning people to be aware of a possible exposure of hepatitis A at a Waffle House in Concord.  According to a release from the department, they re investigating a case of the virus in an employee at the location on Vinehaven Drive NE. It is located on Exit 60 right off Interstate 85.  Marcella Beam, chief community health officer and PIO for the Cabarrus Health Alliance, said possible exposure could have happened on June 20 between 9 p.m. and midnight or June 21 from 12 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Health officials in Cabarrus, Gaston and Mecklenburg counties are reporting a recent increase in the number of cases of the vaccine-preventable, highly contagious viral liver infection. In Gaston County, the number of hepatitis A cases spiked to 70 during three months of 2021 compared to 33 total cases between 2018 and 2020, according to a county news release issued in May. “We’ve really never seen anything like this,” Ellen Wright, communicable disease supervisor for the Gaston County Health Department, said in the release. “The case numbers are the highest we’ve seen and continue to climb.”
