New Canaan Country School Fourth Graders Highlight World Changers in Multi-genre Research Project

Next New Canaan Country School fourth graders prepared and shared multi-genre research projects on people who have made an impact on the world at a publishing party held in the Lower School, March 30. “Jackie Robinson was an amazing baseball player and became the first African American to play in the Major League,” explained fourth grade student Topher Kern of New Canaan. The projects are the culmination of the fourth grade’s yearlong emphasis on the theme “Justice for All,” which focuses on those who fight for social justice and make a significant impact on the world while enduring significant personal sacrifices of their own.

Tapping into Tradition: A Sweet Celebration of the Season

Next “It’s really surprising how much sap is in these buckets. I totally didn’t expect this.” Fourth grade student Henry Macon of Norwalk is peering underneath the silver lid of an aluminum bucket. He and his classmates are participating in the long-standing New Canaan Country School tradition of collecting sap from the tapped maple trees which line the school’s front driveway and dot the landscape of its 75-acre campus.  “We’ve had some warmer weather today, so the juices are really flowing,” acknowledges Visual Arts Teacher Chris Lawler with a deep chuckle. Lawler, who is as comfortable outdoors as in, teaches wood-working skills, light soldering and jewelry making at the Pre-k through Grade 9 school. In addition, he has also overseen maple syrup production for 27 seasons. The program itself goes back to at least the 1970s.

Thank you for helping others

Person-to-Person (P2P) would like to thank the community for supporting the record levels of assistance it has provided since the start of the pandemic. In 2020, P2P’s emergency assistance programs provided groceries to prepare 1.9M home-cooked meals, over $850,000 in financial support and holiday programs to support families and individuals struggling to make ends meet. More than 2,000 winter coats were distributed in partnership with Beiersdorf’s Keep Norwalk Warm event, more than double last year’s distribution. And rather than cancel its annual Toy Store, P2P created a winter wonderland drive-through distribution so 2,000 children could receive board games, books, stuffed animals and gift cards for toys.
