Queensland records three new cases as state begins first day of lockdown

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk attacked the federal Government over its Covid vaccine advice during an extraordinary press conference on Wednesday.  Queensland announced three new cases on the first day of its snap three-day lockdown affecting 3.5million people but the focus of the update quickly turned to the Morrison government s new recommendations for AstraZeneca and people under the age of 40. There has been no national cabinet decision about providing AstraZeneca to the under 40s, the Premier said.  My message to Queenslanders today is please listen to Dr Young and listen to the health experts when it comes to the vaccine.

Almost half of the Australian population in lockdown

20 hours ago Almost half of Australia is back in lockdown as multiple COVID outbreaks grow across the country. Queensland has become the latest state to impose stay at home orders on 4 million residents in the South East, Townsville, Palm Island and Magnetic Island until Friday. The move follows WA’s announcement as the Perth and Peel regions go into day two of their four-day lockdown. Nearly 6 million people in Sydney and its surrounding regions are in the midst of a two week lockdown after the Delta strain led to 149 cases. Darwin and Palmerstone’s measures have been extended until Friday after 10 cases were linked to a gold mine cluster.

One new case as nation delicately poised to control simultaneous outbreaks

Victoria has recorded one new locally acquired case overnight. Image: AAP 1 of 1 5370537724001 Victoria has reported one new locally acquired case of COVID-19 overnight and one case in hotel quarantine as four states across the nation scramble to contain outbreaks of the highly infectious Delta variant of the virus. The one new local case was a primary close contact of a previously reported case linked to the Epping Private Hospital outbreak and had been in isolation throughout their infectious period. There are now just nine active cases across the state, but health minister Martin Foley said with more than 12 million Australians in lockdown, restrictions across Victoria would not be eased for the next seven days to make sure we keep Victorians safe .
